A BABY born with severely under-developed lungs died on the day of his birth.

A leading paediatric pathologist told an inquest that Nikodem Sobolewska had died of pulmonary hypoplasia.

Dr Melanie Newbold said medical science had nothing to offer on the condition, despite advances in other areas.

She said she could not rule out the possibility that the lung condition could be the result of a genetic problem and urged the child's parents to speak to appropriate experts so they could be advised as far as any further children they may be considering having.

The proceedings were translated for Nikodem's Polish parents who live in Hazel Close, Blackburn. They said scans during pregnancy had been normal.

Dr Newbold said said the lungs did not appear to have grown since about 21 weeks.

Coroner Michael Singleton recorded a verdict of natural causes.
