SEVEN people were injured following a six car pile-up on one of East Lancashire's busiest roads this morning.

Police are warning people to take care while driving following the smash on the A56 Edenfield by-pass which was caused by black ice.

The accident happened on the southbound carriageway near to the start of the M66 just after 7.30am when the driver of a Toyota Avensis lost control.

Another five vehicles crashed trying to avoid the incident, including a blue Ford Galaxy which careered down an embankment.

Two people had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters.

Six people were taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital and Fairfield Hospital, Bury, with non-life threatening injuries, the ambulance service said.

The road was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared and the carriageway gritted, causing major tailbacks.

A police spokesman said: "The driver of the Toyota lost control due to the weather and the other vehicles crashed trying to avoid the original crash.

"It was a genuine accident and amazingly nobody was seriously injured."
