TWO councillors have called for the overhaul of a town’s water mains after the third flood in three years on the same street.

Darwen East Liberal Democrats Roy Davies and Paul Browne are furious that pipes burst on Greenway Street on Monday. It follows two similar leaks in 2017 and 2018.

Now they want supplier United Utilities to review the state of pipes across Darwen and replace the mains in the Sudell area.

In August 2018 there was another leak in Nicholas Street near the town centre.

UU had to send out tankers to restore supply on Friday while engineers repaired the damaged pipes and were still reinstating the road surface five days later.

A section of the water main was replaced.

Cllr Browne, who lives in Greenway Street, said: “This is disgusting. It’s the third burst and flood on my road in three years.

“They need to replace the mains in this area of Darwen as part of a complete overhaul of the pipes in the town.

“I feel sorry for the people on the other side of Greenway Street who had water leaking into their gardens and houses."

Cllr Davies, who lives on nearby Olive Lane, said: “The water came past my house on Olive Lane. With people being on lockdown, that last thing we need is a plague of water leaks."

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for the recent water burst on Greenway Street. We of course appreciate having an uninterrupted supply of water has never been more essential during this period and our response included using water tankers to ensure we minimised the impact to our customers and they continued to have water during the repair.

“To help make the network more resilient we replaced a section of the water main and will be upgrading the pressure management valve to minimise the risk of further bursts.”
