A 92-YEAR-OLD man was followed back to his home and assaulted in a ‘sickening attack’.

An appeal has been launched after the pensioner was followed back to his house in Billinge Avenue, Blackburn, on Wednesday, between 8pm and 8.20pm and ‘seriously assaulted’.

A police spokesman said the man had walked via Preston Old Road and Buncer Lane before he was attacked outside his house by a man who was riding a motorbike.

They want witnesses who saw the bike which was displaying ‘L’ plates and the rider who was wearing a black helmet.

The pensioner suffered a cut to his head, a bump on his forehead and a possible broken nose after he had fallen to the floor during the attack. The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

A Billinge Avenue resident said they were horrified to discover the man had been attacked.

He said: “I can’t believe someone would attack such an elderly man outside his house.

“What on earth was the guy thinking of? It’s disgusting and horrible.

“I hope the police can catch him so he gets the punishment he deserves.”

Another Billinge Avenue resident said: “This man was going about his business and was attacked, I’m shocked.

“It’s really brought home the fact this sort of thing can happen anywhere.

“We live on a nice road and this doesn’t happen very often. I just he isn't too badly shaken up. by his ordeal.”

Police said it is thought the attacker was riding his bike when he attacked the pensioner.

Another Billinge Avenue resident said: “I do hope this man is okay and he can carry on without any severe impact.

“It’s despicable that a man of his age, of 92 years, could be assaulted and left with injuries while walking home on a Wednesday evening.”

The police said the motive behind the assault was not known but they were appealing for anyone who happened to see the incident, had driven down the road around 8pm or had any information about the attack to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “If anyone has any information that could assist in identifying the offender for his sickening and unwarranted attack.

“Or if anyone has any CCTV footage that would cover the route the gentleman walked home they should come forward.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting log reference LC-20180815-1309.
