A MOTHER who was told she would never have children after undergoing chemotherapy has celebrated 10 years in remission from cancer.

Lisa Capstick was diagnosed with lymphoma in December 2007 and it turned her world ‘upside down’.

The 39-year-old felt a lump on her neck and went to see a doctor that day and the cancer was diagnosed.

The psychiatric nurse had 12 cycles of chemotherapy before she was told she was in remission.

During treatment the mum-of-two said for six months her life hung in the balance.

She said: “It was extremely frightening, it just came out of the blue.

“I didn’t want to tell my parents for fear of upsetting them, it was a worrying time.

“It was so scary, I was healthy and felt fine before any of this happened.”

Miss Capstick, from Oswaldtwistle, said she was told by doctors she would be infertile after the chemotherapy.

However, she defied the odds and gave birth to two girls, Olivia Swanick, eight, and Erin Swanick, six.

Miss Capstick said: “I was so happy to have my little girls, I was told when I was pregnant to terminate the pregnancy because of risk of faults with the baby.

“However I was determined not to do that and I’m so happy I didn’t.

“It was great to have children, it was so overwhelming.”

Lymphoma occurs when white blood cells that help to fight infection become out of control.

They divide in an abnormal way or do not die when they should.

Miss Capstick held a 10-year anniversary party in Jubilee Street, Oswaldtwistle, to celebrate overcoming cancer which friends and relatives attended.

She said: “More than 100 people turned out and it was fantastic.

“All together we raised more than £1,200 which will go towards the Lymphoma Action charity.

“They do a great deal of work to help those suffering with what I had.

“I never knew about lymphoma before I got it and there will be many others who didn’t know about it either.

“It’s amazing now I’ve been signed off by a doctor, I want to enjoy my life to the full and spend as much time as I can with my children.”
