SCHOOLS have been urged to think green over the summer holidays.

After the success of the Green Hero Awards this year, schools in Lancashire are being urged to nominate ideas for keeping their schools environment friendly.

The annual awards are hosted by AGC Chemicals and are a part of the Lancashire Science Festival at the University of Central Lancashire.

It was organised by Newground, part of the Together Housing Group. The awards recognise schools that have made efforts to reduce their carbon footprints, and this year's winners were Lammack Primary School.

The judges were impressed with their waste awareness themed raps and songs.

Other winners were also chosen by the judges from Newground, the Lancashire Science Festival, and Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

They included, Peel Park Primary School in Accrington - Wildlife Warriors, Stoneyholme Primary School, Burnley - Outdoor Skill School, St John's Catholic Primary School, Poulton-Le-Fylde - Global Educators, Newchurch St. Nicholas, Rawtenstall - Green Fingers, Roe Lee Park Primary School in Blackburn – School Grounds, St Thomas CE Primary School, Blackburn – Buzz School, Thorn Primary School, Bacup – Sharing the Outdoors, Cherry Fold Primary School, Burnley – Stone Age School, and Anchorsholme Academy in Blackpool – Every Child Wild.

Daniel McDermott, Education and Training Coordinator at Newground, said: "Although we’ve only just wrapped up the Green Hero Awards for this year, we are encouraging schools to start thinking ahead.

"We hope teachers and pupils will take the summer holidays to think about ideas for how they can make their schools more environmentally friendly and put those ideas into practice when they return in September.

"This way when the awards open in spring, they will have lots of evidence they can submit in their nominations."
