A MAJOR road will face closures as it undergoes long awaited repair work to fix potholes.

Hyndburn Road in Accrington will be resurfaced from its junction with Oxford Street to the roundabout by the railway viaduct.

A temporary road closure will be in place from 7pm until 5am each day from August 13 to August 19 to allow the work to take place.

The stretch of road includes the entrances to Asda, McDonald’s and the Vue cinema.

The work will be carried out by Lancashire County Council who said the road is 'badly worn' and will aim to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Councillors in Hyndburn said they were pleased that after many emails and letters resurfacing work will be taking place.

Cllr Loraine Cox, who represents Accrington North on the county council, said it is a welcome move and something they have been working towards.

She said: “Since the end of last year it has been something that we have received numerous complaints about.

“Me and Cllr Munsif Dad have brought it up several times to the county council.

“It’s quite a busy road which a lot of people use on a regular basis into the town.

“Therefore making sure the road is safe is very important.

“The state of the road has been a big concern for people in the area.

“We’re very pleased that action is taking place.”

She also said she is pleased to see the road closures will be on an evening, and that any disruption will be worth it when the road is repaired.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones has also been in contact with the county council to repair the problem road.

At the end of last year the road had to be closed for several days after a ‘hole’ was spotted, which county council bosses said was caused by a burst water main.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We will be resurfacing this length of road as it is badly worn, and in need of replacement.

"As this is a very busy road the work will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption as far as possible, however we're grateful for people's patience while it is ongoing."
