A FORMER Chief Constable has been appointed to help identify projects deserving of cash to stop convicted criminals from reoffending.

Jerry Graham will advise Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw on how to distribute £200,000 a year.

Projects seeking grants from the new 'Reducing Reoffending Fund' have until July 2 to apply.

It is aimed at charities, organisations and partners seeking to work with offenders and help integrate them back into the community.

Mr Graham, formerly a senior officer in the Lancashire police and most recently Chief Constable in Cumbria, has been appointed as chairman of the county's four regional 'Reducing Reoffending Boards'.

Mr Grunshaw said: "Policing alone cannot prevent people reoffending and this builds on work already been undertaken.

"Jerry and the boards will play an important part in identifying projects which can make a real difference across our communities and help me achieve one of my key priorities to tackle crime and reoffending.

Mr Graham said: "I am looking forward to getting started, making a difference and working with other board members ensure the work we do links in with the Commissioner's priorities."

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Jacques said: “Breaking the cycle of crime is not an easy task. Investment, tailored support and close partnership work between agencies are critical to help an offender stop reoffending and contribute positively once more to their community."
