A PUBLIC inquiry to decide the future of a proposed high school in Burnley is due to start today.

The hearing at Burnley Town Hall is being held to determine whether Unity College can be built on the Lower Towneley Playing Fields, in Towneley Park.

As part of the £250million Building Schools for the Future scheme in Burnley and Nelson Lancashire County Council wants to be build the college on the playing fields.

However, Burnley Council has refused to hand over land needed for the new school because it believes the college should be built elsewhere.

Campaign groups Towneley for the People and Fullegde Action Community Team are also against the school being built on the site because of the loss of parkland and flooding concerns.

If the new college gets the go ahead the existing Unity College building, formerly Towneley High School, would be turned into parkland.

The inquiry is due to start at 10am and last for four days.
