AS Siberian weather is forecast over the coming days, Nostalgia turns its attention to 1947, when East Lancashire shivered through one of the coldest winters of the century.

This photograph takes us down Revidge Road, with snow piled feet high and only a narrow route down the centre navigable for both vehicles and pedestrians.

The bitter weather lasted into the middle of March and conditions were made far worse by a chronic fuel shortage, following the war.

* Thank you to all the readers who contacted us about our image, 'chauffeurs hit the road' earlier this week.

The image of the men and machines of the Blackburn Carriage and Motor Company was taken at the entrance to Blackburn Cemetery, on Whalley New Road.

The church-like building at the top left was the Church of England chapel of rest, now demolished.

John Collins of Blackburn and Darwen Family History Society pointed out, at the bottom centre of the graves, the war memorial cross and the tall grave monument, at the top right of the chapel, which marks the grave of the Baynes family. John Baynes was an alderman of the borough.

The cars were presumably pictured here as they would have been hired for funerals of the wealthier and leading families of the town.
