TRIBUTES have been paid to a former long-standing leader of Burnley Council who has died aged 78.

Ken McGeorge died peacefully in Burnley General Hospital on Thursday.

He was a borough councillor for more than 20 years and leader for 10 years. He was also involved in the GMB union.

Former Burnley MP Peter Pike paid an emotional tribute to his friend and political ally.

He said: "I am very sorry to hear of Ken McGeorge's death.

"My deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Win and all his family.

"Ken was my strongest ally and supporter in the party and a close personal friend for over 30 years.

"For his 10 years as leader we always worked closely together to try and get the best possible for Burnley. Ken and Win also became Mayor and Mayoress in the 80s for a year.

"Ken's life in the union and in the Labour Party and on the council was always dominated by his care for people and his care for Burnley.

"A good Old Labour man, Ken gave over 100 per cent for people.

"He stood down as leader and ultimately from the council due to ill health which he has suffered for many years but always with great humour and cheerfulness and always still with a wish to serve Burnley and the people of Burnley.

"We have all lost a good friend and a good man."

He leaves wife Winifred, children David, Peter, Ann, Colin, Kathryn and Susan; daughters-in-law Lysa, Marie and Caroline; Sons-in-law Tony and Craig; grandchildren Rachel, Adam, Danielle, Gemma, Amy, Natalie and Bethany and great-granchild Charlotte.

Funeral details are being finalised.
