TONY Mowbray credited his players for their resilience as they made it six league wins in a row with a 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at Ewood Park.

A Leon Best own goal and late Danny Graham header ensured another three points for Rovers who were forced to dig deep to see the game out.

Charlton saw plenty of the ball after the break but David Raya made two excellent saves as Rovers claimed a first clean sheet in a month.

And Mowbray admits it was a tough game against a good side.

“It was tough –they asked lots of questions of us,” Mowbray said.

“I thought we deserved something more from the first 45 minutes than we got.

“If we had been 1-0 down I’m sure we would have been the team pressing and trying to break them down.

“Credit to them, they had a go but brilliant resilience and team spirit from us and the togetherness with the crowd when they got involved to drive and drive the team on to a clean sheet.

“It was great to finish with a second goal, I think 2-0 looks a bit unfair on them as it looks routine but they are a good team.

“We prepared slightly differently from how we have been and I think we needed to because they showed what a good side they were and it wasn’t a day for a blanket press as they could have played through.

“But they got the job done and that was all that mattered.”

Rovers had scored 16 goals in their previous five league games but they were reliant on some strong defending to see them over the line.

And Mowbray added: “The team have to know that’s there on the days we need it.

“We have some big tests coming up and it will be tough to play four games in 10 or 12 days at the intensity that we’re asking of them.

“Sometimes we might have to sit and let the opposition have it, block off the areas and look to counter-attack as we can’t always play on the front foot.

“As long as we keep learning and findings ways of winning football matches then we will be okay.

“You want to be dominant, play on the front foot, ask questions and create chances yet there’s lots of win games.

“Leicester City won the Premier League playing on the counter-attack and with men behind the ball yet Manchester City look like they are going to win the league with total domination.

“There’s lots of ways to be winners.

“For us over the course of 46 games sometimes we have to be really dominant and others we have to show some resilience and counter-attack.

“It was a bit of everything but we prepared for that, the team bought in to it and that’s why it’s good for the team to enjoy the victory because they knew what sort of game it was going to be.”
