A FIRE officer has urged home owners to check their smoke detectors after a blaze involving a grill pan.

Crews were called to Bullough Close, Accrington, after reports that the house was on fire at 6.25pm on Monday.

When they arrived the blaze turned out to be a grill pan fire that had logged much of the property with smoke.

And while the cooker was damaged, Hyndburn fire station watch manager Liam Barker said it could have been a lot worse.

"A smoke detector alerted the home owner to the problem and we were able to take steps to deal with the fire in the correct manner.

"People need to check that their detectors are working properly because they save lives."
