AN East Lancashire MP has attacked doctors surgeries and their use of costly 0844 numbers.

Nigel Evans, Conservative MP for the Ribble Valley, said: "I simply feel that it is a point of principle - that people who are in need of a doctor's appointment should not be charged higher costs for their telephone call.

"There is also the difficulty that these numbers cannot be accessed by patients who are abroad.

"I am delighted that GPs in the Ribble Valley are not using these numbers. Those who are sick should not be ripped off in this way.

"Patients should receive the best care possible.

"I hope that those surgeries using 0844 numbers and those intending to use them think again."
