Top chef Paul Heathcote was awarded an honourary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University for services to the food industry.
The Longridge restaurant owner was honoured at a ceremony at Liverpool Cathedral.
University orator, Professor Frank Sanderson said: "Paul Heathcote has done more to raise culinary standards in the North West of England than any other person.
His business success has been sustained by real entrepreneurial flair, high culinary standards and an ability to manage change.
Paul said: "As someone who left school with few formal qualifications, this is a huge honour for me."
