TWO men have been charged in connection with an attempted armed robbery near a supermarket ATM.

Roger Calland, 53, and Ryan Grogan, 41, from Rochdale, have been charged with robbery and possession of a bladed article in Burnley last Saturday morning.

The incident happened between 9.15am and 9.25am as a Loomis security worker has been carrying a cash container which was to be used to fill up the cash machine at the Tesco Extra on Centenary Way.

The guard chased one of the offenders and managed to grab the cash cassette back.

They have been remanded in custody until Thursday, December 21 when they will appear at Burnley Crown Court.

DC Melissa Chadwick from Burnley Police said: “I would like to thank members of the public for sharing our initial appeal and for those who have come forward with information so far.

"Anyone with information in relation to this crime should let the police know immediately.

"We’re particularly interested in speaking to a man who was walking with a young boy – possibly around age four - from Centenary Way towards the main Tesco entrance, a few seconds before the attempted robbery.”
