SCORING sensation Joe Nuttall is determined to fire his way into a regular first team place after getting a goal on his Football League debut.

Blackburn Rovers’ rising star backed up his 10 goals for the club’s Under 23s with a close range finish moments after coming off the bench to replace Danny Graham against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday.

An equaliser for the Cod Army took the gloss off Nuttall’s night, as Rovers were held to a 2-2 draw in one of their games in hand.

But after describing his goal as “the highlight” of his fledgling career, he wants it to be the first of many to work his way into manager Tony Mowbray's first team plans more frequently.

“It’s just given me a massive lift to push on and try to get in the team more regularly and hopefully try to get a start,” said the 20-year-old, who joined Rovers in the summer after a pre-season trial.

“I’ve scored - I’ve almost got the winner - but I can’t rest on that. I’ve got to keep going and if I’m not in (the manager’s) selection next time I’ve got to get my head down and keep going until he has no choice.

“That’s what it’s been about since I came here. If I kept scoring I know that I’m good enough to play in this league, and if I keep scoring the chances will come.”

Of his goal, which came from Derrick Williams heading on Craig Conway’s cross at the far left post, the former Manchester City trainee said: “It’s what dreams are made of.

“It’s just being in the right place at the right time and luckily I was there to literally tap it home.

“I saw the ball go over my head and realised I couldn’t get there. It’s just about re-adjusting your position to where the ball might land, and thankfully it just dropped right to my feet.

“Derrick headed it back across. As soon as he has headed it I can see the keeper coming for it and I just knew it was going to be a mix-up. As soon as I saw the keeper coming out of his net I knew he wasn’t going to get it and it was just going to come to me to tap it home.

“It’s a great feeling.

“I haven’t got words to describe how I felt at that moment in time.

“It’s just the best moment of my career so far, my first league goal at first team level, and hopefully it’s the first of many.”

Nuttall, who scored on his senior debut to beat Stoke Under 21s in the Checkatrade Trophy, added: “I didn’t think that night could be topped. To score on my league debut just doesn’t compare. It’s much better.”

However, Nuttall could not hide his disappointment that Tuesday night’s goal was not the winner, after substitute Wes Burns cancelled it out for Fleetwood in the 82nd minute.

“The main disappointment isn’t getting the three points," he said. "But it’s a point gained and hopefully we can go on to the next games and get points in them, in the cup games go through to the next rounds, and just keep picking up points as we go along.”
