TWO students from St Christopher's CE School in Accrington are celebrating after achieving top grades despite a tough couple of years.

Paul Hitchcock, known as PJ, has ambitions to be a journalist after achieving two As and a B and gaining a place at Salford University to study TV and radio.

The 18-year-old was named Secondary School Pupil of the Year at the Lancashire Telegraph School Awards after being nominated for his enthusiasm and positive attitude.

During his time at the school his mum died and dad was diagnosed with cancer, but despite these challenges he volunteered for a range of extra-curricular activities and helped out at the school.

He said: "It has been quite a challenge these last two years but it has all paid off.

"It is a good result and I have got into my first choice university."

His classmate Alana Catlow, 18, achieved a A* and two Bs and will study Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University.

She said: "It has been really hard. I do not really have a sole carer. I have been through this independently. I can't believe how it's come out. I feel overwhelmed."
