Firecrews were called to the St James's Street branch around 2.30pm as 100 customers were guided out on to the street.
Crew manager Keiron Ogden from Burnley Fire Station said: "Appliances from this station and Nelson were sent to M and S in the town centre around 2.30pm after smoke was seen coming from under a refrigeration unit.
"By the time we got there it had stopped but there was a bit of a burning smell.

"About 100 customers were evacuated for about 15 minutes. There was no danger to anyone."
