SCORES of people 'Walked with an Angel' in memory of a 21-year-old woman who took her own life after struggling to find a job.

The annual event is organised by campaigner Tony Harrison after his daughter Vicky died seven years ago.

The day saw around 40 people walk a 10 mile route travelling from Witton Park around Blackburn before finishing at Mill Hill in a bid to raise awareness of suicide.

Mr Harrison, 60, is now a trustee of national charity PAPYRUS, which is dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

The retired civil engineer from Darwen said it was the sixth year the event took place.

He said: "It's all about raising awareness.

"It's such a taboo subject that's not talked about enough.

"It absolutely has been getting better and we are moving forward, but it's still not enough.

"We need to be talking about mental health problems just like we talk about cancer and diabetes etc, and being aware of the signs.

"We have got to get rid of the stigma.

"The support has been absolutely fantastic, most of these people have been coming every year.

"It shows how much Vicky means to people, we're like a big family."

Mr Harrison also sits on the Blackburn with Darwen Suicide Prevention Strategy Group.

Food and a raffle were on offer for guests at the event and collections were held for PAPYRUS.

The youngest supporter of the event was three day old Lyssie-Mai Brown, who was brought along by mother Debbie Brown.

She said: "Vicky was such a good friend of mine.

"I wasn't going to miss this for the world, the only way I wouldn't have been here is if I was in hospital."

Others who completed the walk were friends and family who were looking to raise awareness of the cause.

This included 'local celebrities' Tina and Delilah, portrayed by Tom Blackburn and Jamie Lynch, who complete the walk every year.

The two were dressed in tutus and tights.

Mr Lynch, 26, said: "It started when I did it four years ago when I wore a dress someone won.

"Then it's just something we've carried on with.

"It's our way of remembering Vicky, she would have loved this.

"Now we've got to start thinking of ideas for next year."

Several guests also came dressed as minions and in yellow as it was Vicky's favourite colour.
