ARMED police will be part of a 'strong' policing operation around this weekend's Elton John gig.

A 'significant' number of officers will be deployed both in and around Blackburn's Ewood Park stadium, at transport hubs, and on surrounding streets, to provide reassurance for those attending.

Large bags and hampers are not being allowed into the stadium and there will be increased checks and searches on the doors.

Fans are advised to arrive as early as possible to reduce delays, as the extra security measures may result in queues.

It is expected up to 15,000 people will be attending the concert on Saturday.

Chief Superintendent Matt Horn said: “This is going to be a fantastic event and we are very much looking forward to welcoming Elton John to East Lancashire on Saturday night.

“We know some concert-goers may have concerns about security on the night in light of recent events, but we would like to reassure those coming that we have received no specific information of a threat to the event.

“Nevertheless we have stepped up security measures and will have a significant police presence, including armed officers, in and around the venue to ensure the evening is safe and enjoyable for all.

“There will also be additional security checks on the doors and we would encourage people to arrive early to allow time for this. Where possible we would also ask people to leave bags at home to reduce delays.”

With a large crowd expected at the concert, those attending are also being asked to follow basic crime prevention advice: use safe and secure car parks; keep vehicles locked with nothing valuable on display and look after personal belongings by keeping items such as keys, wallets and purses in zipped bags or front pockets.

On the day itself we will be tweeting updates and security information from @LancsPolice and we would urge those attending to follow it.

Officers urged anyone who see anything on the day that causes them concern, or raises their suspicions, to call 999 or alert the nearest officer.

Ch Supt Horn said: “We’d like to thank all ticket-holders in advance for their co-operation and support on the night.

“We’d also like to remind people to be respectful of the venue’s neighbours and keep noise to a minimum when leaving the concert.

“Again, after the concert, we will have a significant police presence around the stadium so anybody who sees anything suspicious can tell the nearest officer or contact 999 in an emergency.

“We hope everybody safely enjoys what is sure to be a fantastic night.”
