A TEAM of cyclists are to ride 800 miles across Britain to raise money for a charity mission.

The group of 10 from Oakhill School and Nursery in Whalley will take two weeks to complete the ride from Dover to Durness during the summer holidays.

The youngest person taking part is 13 while the eldest is retired teacher 71-year-old Charles Jepson.

The ride will raise money for the Peru Mission which helps disadvantaged people in the country. Oakhill students are to visit there next year and help build a classroom.

Deputy headteacher and maths teacher Dave Peel said the team is hoping to raise £5,000 for the project.

He said: “Two years ago we did a trip from Lands End to John O’Groats which was around 1,000 miles.

“We decided to do it again this year. This time we are doing the opposite corners of the country from Dover in the South East to Durness in the North West of Scotland.

“We are aiming to do 800 miles in just over 12 days and will be camping every night.

“When we get to Durness on the last day we are planning to catch the ferry across to Cape Wrath so that will be the final point.”

Cape Wrath is the most north-westerly point in Britain.

Mr Peel said there are six boys taking part aged 13 to 16.

“Next year we have got a school visit to Peru so this will raise funds for that,” he said.

“We are planning on doing some building work - perhaps building a classroom or helping a business over there.”

The group has completed three training sessions so far and they have another four or five rides to do.

“We are doing more miles each time and are working our way up to 70 miles a day which is what we will do on the trip.

“They are doing really well.

The group will set off on August 8.
