SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons have recalled a meat product after it was found to contain traces of a bug.

The supermarket chain has recalled 150g ready-to-eat peppered beef slices (Use by 21st February) after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said Listeria monocytogenes had been found in the product.

The bug can cause flu-like symptoms including high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

A statement by Morrisons on the Food Standards Agency read: "We are asking all customers who have bought this Use By date of this product not to consume it and to return it to their nearest Morrisons store where they will receive a full refund.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and assure customers of our continuing commitment to the highest standard of product quality and safety."
