PROPOSALS to build 51 new homes on the site of an old cotton mill will be considered by councillors on Thursday.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Planning Committee has been recommended to approve the scheme on Eclipse Road in Feniscowles.

Altham-based McDermott Development’s want to build 19 three-bedroomed and 32 four-bedroomed homes on the vacant four acre site.

The latest scheme for Eclipse Mill follows the failure of 2012 proposalto build 38 three, four and five bedroomed houses by another firm to take place.

Six nearby residents have objected to the scheme on grounds of traffic and the size of the development.

Livesey with Pleasington Councillor John Pearson said: “I think overall this is good news.

“It’s better to have good housing there than an empty piece of waste ground.”

The design and access statement submitted by McDermott Developments said: “The proposed housing is a mix of three and four bedroomed properties of two and two-and-a-half storey height, in keeping with the surrounding area.

“There is a variance of housing to give more character to the development avoiding a repetitive and uninspiring appearance.

“Currently the site has been left un-maintained since the demolition of Eclipse Mill in 2011, which has resulted in a large number of saplings and overgrowth upon the site which will be cleared .

“A landscaping scheme, providing suitable hedges and trees to enhance the site appearance and help formalise private spaces.

A spokesman for the company said: “We have no comment to make before the committee considers the application.”
