PLANS to build a multi-million pound brewery in Mellor Brook will be discussed at a meeting on Thursday.

Thwaites submitted the proposals to Ribble Valley Council to move their headquarters from Blackburn to Sykes Holt.

The 210-year-old family company hopes to spend between £5million and £10million on a new brewery, offices, stables and visitor centre by the end of next year.

The proposals include employing between 90 and 100 staff, slightly more than the current number at the 7.2-acre Star Brewery in Blackburn town centre.

Around 50 will be full-time on the new site just off the A59, producing Thwaites original and mild beers and more than dozen other craft ales.

The Woodland Trust objected to the development on the grounds it would damage Mammon Wood, which is a designated ancient semi-natural woodland site.

The Wildlife Trust also objected. The meeting will take place at the council chambers in Church Street, Clitheroe, from 6.30pm.
