A DRINK driver will have to get on his bike to keep his job after being banned.

Blackburn magistrates heard Clifton William Carefoot faced a 36-mile round trip on his push bike if he is to continue his employment in Longridge because of the ruling.

“He will be a much fitter man by the time his disqualification ends,” said Gwynn Lewis, defending.

Carefoot, 51, of Lane Head, Trough Road, Scorton, pleaded guilty at the hearing to driving with excess alcohol in Clitheroe Road, Knowle Green, in September.

He was banned by magistrates from driving for 20 months and fined £930 with £150 costs and £90 victim surcharge.

Mr Lewis said the police had only spoken to his client because they were looking for a similar vehicle to his which had been involved in another incident “He won’t lose his job as a result of the inevitable ban but it will make his like extremely difficult,” said Mr Lewis.

“He lives 18 miles from where he works and the only way he can make that journey is on a bike.”
