A MAN who appeared before Blackburn magistrates on charges of police assault and resisting arrest, refused to accept the authority of the court and demanded his release.
Steven Champ, 50, told the court he was a political activist and refused to give personal details apart from confirming his first name.

He refused to be represented by the duty solicitor, who he said was an agent of the authorities, and demanded to be released so he could bring charges against the police who he claimed had throttled him.
The court eventually entered not guilty pleas to both offences on the defendant’s behalf and he was remanded on bail for trial on February 7. He was warned that if he failed to attend, the case could be proved in his absence.
