And the Park Lee Road organisation, which cares more than 1,000 people with life-limiting illnesses, was singled out for the importance it places on supporting families and carers, as well as patients.

Hospice bosses, who have already lined up a significant improvements programme for 2017, including a new contemplation room, have expressed their joy at the CQC’s verdict.

One patient told inspectors: “It’s not a place to go to die - it’s a place to live.”

An approach which accentuated ‘person-centred care’ earned plaudits and the ongoing partnership with related organisations, in providing end-of-life care.

Lyn Stevenson, the hospice’s chief executive, said: “There are no words to describe how proud I feel.

“Our patients are at the centre of everything we do and our staff and volunteers want to give their very best for them each and every day.”

Graham Parr, trustees chairman, said: “We are delighted that we have been recognised by an external professional body.

“It confirms what we have always known, that we provide an outstanding service.

“It’s all down to the people that work for us, not only the employed people but the volunteers who are critical to keeping the hospice going.

“It gives everybody working for the hospice confidence that the service we do provide is the best.”

Jackie Rigby, a day-patient who has been diagnosed with cervical cancer, said: “I didn’t want to go to the hospice at first because I was scared. I came in and it has been brilliant.

“I love this place so much. I would be lost without East Lancashire Hospice.

“This is a safe place where I can talk about cancer. The staff are so caring. It’s a very special place.”

George Moss was diagnosed with cancer of the throat, liver and lymph glands 18 months ago and has been attending complementary therapies at the hospice every Wednesday.

He said: “I think they are amazing here. I look forward to coming here every week.”
