NEWS that a regular bus service is set to be re-introduced in Sabden has been welcomed by campaigners as ‘beyond our best hopes’.

Lancashire County Council is proposing changes to bus routes in the Ribble Valley, which could be introduced from Monday, December 5, after funding became available to extend a bus service in the Henthorn area of Clitheroe where new housing is being developed.

The previous service was scrapped in May when the county council removed the subsidy it paid for weekend and evening services to operator Transdev.

This led to a village-wide campaign and protests.

Heather Spry, a member of the campaign group, said: “The lack of a bus services has had an effect on many, from school students to the elderly who have struggled to get out shopping or to medical appointments.

“I’ve heard several instances where people have put their houses up for sale, people in rented accommodation have moved out of the village or requested a transfer from social housing because there are no buses.

“This news of a six-days-a-week regular service is beyond our best expectations and everyone in the village will be delighted.”

Cllr Richard Newmark, who represents the area, said: “The service is set to come back in December and it will simply be the best Christmas present for all in the village.

“A lot of people including the campaign group, parish council and many more have united and to hear this news is fantastic.”

The new Service Four from Clitheroe to Peel Park will extend to Padiham, and also serve Whalley and Sabden.

The service will operate generally every two hours Monday to Saturday daytime, and incorporate the school bus service 634 for students from Sabden to Clitheroe Royal Grammar School.

A final decision is due to be taken on Thursday by the council.
