MORE than a thousand people showed their support for a memorial day at the Hare and Hounds in Lammack.

People turned up in their droves to pay their respects to much-missed Christopher Smith and enjoy ‘His Last Wish’ Outdoor Concert.

As reported in the Lancashire Telegraph, the tragic death of Chris, who died from leukaemia on Christmas Eve in 2006, touched the hearts of many and spurred his family to raise money in his name.

The eight-hour concert had several upcoming local artists who performed hour long sets.

The list of performers included Megan Stanford, Robert George Fox, Roadkill Revival, Majesticks, Kazz Toohill, President Ray Gun, Type 40, On-Parole and a Jessie J and Pink tribute act.

There was also plenty of entertainment for families with children who could try zorb football, bouncy castles and children’s rides All money donated was put towards Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, where the 16-year-old received his treatment, to honour his wish ‘to buy children their Christmas presents’.

His sister Rebecca Dawn Smith said: “I would like to thank everyone for coming and for all your donations, and being extra patient with the minor hiccups.

“Cancellations happen but we still had a fab day and night.

“The reason for this event was to raise money for Manchester’s Children’s Hospital, who cared for my brother who sadly passed away on Christmas Eve in 2006.

“This year is 10 years since he left and we’ve hosted several charity events in the past.

“We are hoping that the money raised will buy each child in the same ward as Chris a joint game station gift for their games room so they could have a magical Christmas.

Ian Robertson, owner of the Hare and Hounds, said: “It was a lovely day and one I’ll remember.

“I’d say around 1,500 people turned up to show their support and it’s a lovely thing to see so many people care about Chris.

“The bands put on a good performance.

“When Chris was in treatment 10 years ago he said his last wish would be to get enough money to help the hospital buy children Christmas presents.

“I don’t know the figure that was raised but all proceeds will help the hospital and fulfill Chris’s last wish.”
