CHILDREN who allegedly threw stones at cars driving along a busy main road through Burnley have been blasted as ‘reckless’ for putting lives at risk.

PCSO Chris Hamer was driving along Princess Way at 5.30pm on Monday with children in his car when he heard two bangs.

On inspection he discovered a rock had hit one side of his car and the other bounced and hit the underneath of the vehicle.

Other witnesses reported seeing children throwing rocks in the area.

Police have not arrested anyone in connection with the incident and no suspect descriptions have been issued.

PCSO Hamer, who was off duty at the time and driving his own vehicle, said: “I didn’t see any youths because I was concentrating on the road but I heard them laughing because I had my windows open slightly.

“I heard two bangs so I assume two rocks were thrown. It appears one hit the side of one of my wheels and the other bounced and hit the underneath of my car. No permanent damage was done, fortunately.

“This kind of behaviour is incredibly reckless. I was carrying young children in my vehicle. If one of these rocks had gone through my window they could have been injured.

“It’s unfair to motorists who have to foot the bill for repairs to their cars.

“I understand how difficult it is for officers to catch those responsible and I’m glad to hear how proactive the councillors have been to engage with the community.”

Community leaders have also reacted with outrage at the incident.

Daneshouse with Stoneyholme ward councillor Wajid Khan said: “This behaviour is shocking and the consequences could have been horrific.

“I have spoken to a number of people about this and we are trying to identify the children involved.

“When they are found they need to be spoken to and made to realise how serious this behaviour was. They were putting lives at risk.

“There parents also need to be talked to about knowing where their children are at all times and what they are doing.

“We need to work together as councillors, police and social workers to find out who did this and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“I must stress those this is an isolated incident and not the norm.”
