A FAMILY in Blackburn are commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the death of a 'brave and thoughtful boy' by hosting a charity event for the cause he supported.

Christopher Smith died aged 16 on Christmas Eve 2006, a month after being diagnosed with with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

His sister, Rebecca Smith, 24, has now set up a family fun day to carry on some of the fundraising that her brother started when he was ill at Pendlebury Children's Hospital.

The event called 'His Last Wish' will be held at the Hare and Hounds, Lammack Road in Blackburn on Sunday, August 28.

Rebecca, of Hector Road, Darwen, said: "During his time in Pendlebury Hospital he was disappointed at the limited play equipment and toys available for the younger patients and decided to organise a fundraiser but before the plans were finalised he passed away.

"He would be made up at the work we've been doing.

"He was always thinking about others even when he was going through pain himself, he was so thoughtful."

The family have carried out a variety of fundraising activities over the past 10 years to raise money for CLIC Sargent charity, who specialise in working with young people with cancer.

However to mark the anniversary of his death, Rebecca decided to go the extra mile by hosting the event titled 'His Last Wish''.

The event will raise funds for Manchester Children's Hospital Ward 84 as this is where the Pendlebury Hospital service has moved.

Rebecca, a mother-of-three, said: "I saw everyone at the ward the other day, they were all so helpful.

"We're really hopefully it will be a big event, it would be great to raise a lot of money."

Rebecca hopes to raise enough to buy each child on the children's cancer ward a gift for Christmas and then a joint game station gift for their games room.

The event will also feature a brand new Peugeot 108 car being raffled off thanks to Perry's car dealers in Blackburn, with tickets costing £10 and net proceeds going to the children's cancer ward.

Also on offer will be bouncy castles, stalls, competitions, a charity football match, zorb football, children's activities and bands.

Former landlady Rebecca said: "We were all very proud of him, the work he did and how brave he was.

"Now I'm just hoping to make my brothers last wish come true with this event."
