A SINGLE mum from Darwen who was caught trying to smuggle drugs into a prison has been jailed for 14 months.

Preston Crown Court heard Danielle Stewart was caught with cocaine, cannabis resin and amphetamines during a visit to HMP Haverigg.

The 28-year-old of Olive Lane pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of drugs with intent to supply when she appeared in the dock.

The court heard the mum placed the Class A and B drugs in a locker at the prison near Millom.

The prosecutor said Stewart’s partner was serving a sentence at the jail when she committed the offence on August 20 last year.

Stewart was handed the drugs by someone she has not named and told to take them to HMP Haverigg during a visit, the court was told.

However, the prosecution said she did not take the banned substances into the visiting area and instead placed them in the locker, where they were discovered by a member of prison staff.

Stewart was arrested and admitted possessing the Class A and B drugs.

For the cocaine offence she was given 14 months’ imprisonment, for possessing amphetamine with intent to supply she was given a concurrent sentence of eight months’ imprisonment and an eight-month concurrent sentence for the cannabis offence.

The prosecution offered no evidence for charges of bringing or throwing articles into prison.

At a previous hearing Recorder Mark Laprell told her to expect a lengthy spell behind bars.
