DOZENS of mourners turned out to pay their respects to East Lancashire's oldest resident Alice Horne - who died aged 109.

The Mayor of Hyndburn Marlene Haworth was in attendance at Accrington Crematorium yesterday and presented flowers from all staff at Hyndburn Council to thank Alice for her endless charity work for which she was awarded Freedom of the Borough in 2005.

Piper Trevor Stokes from Accrington Pipe Band led the hearse and mourners to the crematorium.

Speaking about her life following her death on February 29, her nephew Kenneth Horne, said: "I don't think I'm amazed that she lived to the age she did, because she never looked her age or behaved it and she just seemed to keep going.

"She just had this strong spirit and it has been a tremendous pleasure to carry on visiting her for so long and taking her out in Lancashire, because she never sat still and always had to be doing something.

"I have so many fond memories of Auntie Alice and she accomplished so much."
