TWO men from Todmorden have been convicted of posting quotes online praising Islamic State in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.

Oliver Johnson and Mark Sutcliffe, both aged 21, were said by police to be high on cannabis when they made the remarks on social media.

Calderdale magistrates heard they claimed to support the terror attacks on the French capital and warned of a bogus future attack in Manchester.

Each was convicted of sending malicious communications, after admitting they made the comments for shock value and neither had any links to Islamic State or the Muslim community.

Johnson, of Dineley Avenue, was given 200 hours community service and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £60 victim surcharge.

Sutcliffe, of Halifax Road, was sent on bail for sentence to Bradford Crown Court in March.

Speaking after the case, Pc Ryan Ashton said: “This was an inflammatory post which caused great upset to people not only in the local community, but to the wider public who were rightly disgusted by the post so soon after the devastating attacks in Paris, only days beforehand.”

He praised members of the public for immediately reporting the comments, resulting in the successful prosecution.
