A PICTURE of four Blackburn men helping clear up the devastation caused by floods in Cumbria has gone viral on the internet.

It comes as supplies collected across East Lancashire were delivered to those in the most affected areas.

Hassan Karolia, Rehmatullah Mulla, Ashfaq Mulla and Sufyaan Valimulla were representing the Al-Imdaad Foundation UK, which is based in Audley.

Carlisle resident Matt Begg took a picture of the men on a debris-ridden street. His picture has since been shared about 6,000 times on Facebook, with positive comments about all sections of the community helping out.

Mr Begg said: “These four gentlemen from Blackburn came up to Carlisle after its recent floods giving help, support, delicious sandwiches and hugs.”

Colne Tyre Centre opened until 10pm on Thursday to collect donations for a van load of supplies.

Staff and customers from the firm filled the van with supplies.

Yesterday, the director of the firm, Azam Iqbal, travelled to the village of Slingsby, in Cumbria, and delivered the donations, which will be distributed by sea cadets there.

A Lancashire flood recovery fund appeal, which was launched this week, has also reached more than £15,000 in 24 hours to support communities in North Lancashire affected by Storm Desmond this week.

The recovery fund’s appeal raises funds to directly support individuals and families already struggling, and vital community organisations and resident groups, in the areas affected by Storm Desmond.

Community Foundation for Lancashire launched the appeal by making a £5,000 donation.

The appeal complements the Community Foundation for Cumbria’s recovery fund.
