BLACKBURN’S longest-established family business, Ainsworth Jewellers , is celebrating 50 years in the same town centre shop this weekend.

The 145-year old firm moved to its current Darwen Street premises, two doors down from where it started, in 1965.

Now run by father and son team Kenneth, 77, and Phil, 49, it will hold a party for long-serving customers on Saturday.

The firm, which was founded in 1870 by Joseph Ainsworth at 63 Darwen Street, settled at its current location at 57/59 in 1965.

Phil said: “We are the longest-established business in the town centre.

“For a firm to last so long, remain in the fourth and fifth generation of the same family and spend half a century in the same location is a remarkable achievement.

“I could not let it pass without organising a celebration.

“We are looking forward to the next few years in Blackburn when an exciting development of the town is taking place.

“We hope that with the new Cathedral Quarter, Darwen Street will become the focus of independent shopping.”

A display of archives and exhibits featuring a perfectly-cut diamond tiara, launched at Blackburn’s Heritage Festival this year, is to become a permanent exhibition at the store.
