We're a nation of dog lovers and when it comes to breeds, it seems that Blackburn's dog of choice is the soppy-eyed retriever.

The dog topped the polls as Blackburn's favourite in a recent survey by The Kennel Club, with more than 15.77% of residents opting for the floppy haired pooches.

Next on the list came Springer Spaniels (6.22%), followed by Cocker Spaniels (60.8%), Staffordshire Bull Terriers were next at (4.96%) and in fifth place came Boxers at 4.09%. 

When it comes to trends, French Bulldogs have become increasingly popular in the area with ownership growing by 440% in the period 2010-2014.  

Dogs that are losing popularity in the area and are identified as 'vulnerable' by the club include the Lakeland Terrier and the Norwich Terrier.
