But there was no love lost when one Clayton-le-Moors man encountered what he branded ‘the Godzilla of spiders’ in his bedroom.

Joe Lindsay, 21, even captured footage of the terrifying beast scurrying around under a glass and uploaded it to his Facebook page. He told us: “I was about to get into bed when I saw it right there on the wall – it was massive.

“I’d say it was about as big as a computer mouse.

“It jumped into my clothes and I thought it was going to put my jacket on and walk out the door!”

Joe, who works as a customer services advisor for BT in Accrington, finally caught the beast and threw it out of a window.

“I’m not too bad with spiders normally, but this one was just so big,” he added.

“After I posted the video on Facebook, my friends were laughing at me saying they would have moved out of the house.”

As Joe threw the creature away, we couldn’t verify the species but it’s the Eratigena atrica – one of the biggest in Europe – that arachnologists claim are turning up in people’s homes as they search for a warm, dry place to make hundreds of baby beasts.

Known as the ‘giant house spider’, despite the fact they spend most of their time outside, they can grow up to a terrifying 12cm long and do sometimes bite, with the pain similar to a bee sting.

The creepy crawly critters are thought to be bigger this year because of the warm, wet summer and a rich bounty of insects to feed upon.
