A ROVERS-MAD bride gave her footy-fanatic husband the perfect wedding gift by inviting his favourite player to their big day.

Janet Mitchell (née Dawson), 32, hatched the plan to surprise newly-betrothed Darren, 28, after they tied the knot at Ewood Park on August 7.

And when Rovers defender Tommy Spurr popped in during their celebration, it almost drew tears of joy from the overwhelmed groom.

Janet said: “I sent the club a letter to see if it was possible and they called me back to say Tommy would do it. They hid him away in the directors’ box while we were having our photos taken. When Tommy came out I thought Darren was going to cry!”

The newlyweds, of Bancroft Avenue, Blackburn, are both season ticket holders and come from Rovers-supporting families.

So, unsurprisingly, the full-back’s appearance went down a storm with the other guests too.

Janet added: “Tommy was brilliant – he couldn’t have been nicer.

“We chatted about football and had some photos taken. Everyone wanted a photo with him!”

The next day Janet and Darren were at Ewood for the first match of the season against Wolves but unfortunately watched their team beaten 2-1.

The new bride told us: “Hopefully things will improve. I still fancy us for a play-off place.”
