A PROJECT which has taken over the running of allotments at Stubbylee Park has been given permission to use a ceremonial coat of arms.

The Close to the Hedge scheme, which took over the allotments when Rossendale Council threatened them with closure last year, wants to use the coat of arms of the former Mayor Aldermen and Burghesses of the Borough of Bacup, as part of its branding.

And councillors at a meeting of the council backed the scheme unanimously.

The Mayor Aldermen and Burghesses of the Borough of Bacup was dissolved in 1974, with ownership passing to Rossendale Council.

Stacksteads councillor Christine Lamb said: "It is great the coat of arms is going to be used. I was pleased when the greenhouses were saved."

The greenhouses are used as a learning and training base for up to 20 adults with learning disabilities from Ewood Day Centre, Haslingden, and groups from NHS Calderstones and Broadley Street.

The centre is also the base for more than 30 horticulture students from Accrington and Rossendale College.
