A MOTORIST was twice the drink-drive limit when he was stopped by police, Burnley magistrates heard.

The court was told how Paul Rogerson, 20, had borrowed a friend's car to do an errand and wasn't insured.

The defendant, of Burrans Meadow, Colne, admitted driving with excess alcohol, no insurance, no test certificate and no licence. He was fined £150, with £50 costs and banned for 14 months.

Andrew Robinson, prosecuting, said police spotted the defendant in the early hours in Colne. The car windows appeared to be misted up and the vehicle had come from the direction of a pub.

The car was stopped and Rogerson spoken to. He smelled of alcohol and was taken to the police station, where the lower of two tests showed 72 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 mililitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Richard Taylor, defending, said it was entirely Rogerson's own fault he was in court. He thought he would be okay to drive.

He fully co-operated with police, had no previous convictions of any nature and was embarrassed to be in court, his solicitor said.
