PRIMARY school children have been given massages to help them relax in the run up to exams.

Earlier this month children at St Oswald's CofE Primary School, Stanhill Road, Knuzden, enjoyed a "day off" as experts taught them how to give each other hand massages and the relaxing martial art tai chi.

The unusual step aimed to help pupils refresh themselves and make them ready to learn.

They have also been doing crafts, had a photography day and even a party.

Headteacher Andrea Gray said the six-week scheme, which has been run throughout Lent, aims to emphasise to the pupils that they need to be relaxed and refreshed if they are to do well in their studies.

Mrs Gray said: "The children love it and it is having a positive impact on school work.

"Stress can affect anyone and children have a lot to deal with when there are exams coming up.

"At the moment many of the classes are revising for Key Stage Four exams and these events that we have been holding can help."

She said that the "day off" was inspired by the popular children's book Jesus' Day Off by Nicolas Allan.

Mrs Gray said: "In the story Jesus is worn out because it was hard work performing miracles and spreading joy through-out the world. So, when the miracles start to go wrong, Jesus is told to take the day off, relax, have some fun and he does.

"He feels bad not doing any work but because he is relaxed he is better equipped to tackle all of life's challenges.

"The children do not learn any less. It is just something different that can really help them feel better and ready to do their school work."

Dr Tam Fry, the honorary chairman of education watchdog The Child Growth Foundation, said the idea for relaxation sessions was "very interesting" and could have great benefits.

He said: "Stressed children will not perform to the best of their abilities in class or in exams.

"This is something that is quite rare in schools and is well worth considering."
