PEOPLE living in Pendle are on target to recycle more than twice the national average of plastic bottles this year.

According to Pendle Council, 470 tonnes of bottles will be recycled - which equates to an average of 12kg per house.

The national average is 5kg.

Now the council is featured on the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) website, which gives advice to businesses on how to increase their recycling.

Council chiefs have said the success was down to the authority's fortnightly rubbish collections and 30 bottle banks which operate in the borough.

Ian McInery, Pendle Council's operational services manager, said: "This is excellent news and shows just how the people of Pendle have taken to recycling.

"Pendle Council started its kerbside collection scheme in June 2005 and we currently collect from 39,000 households - 99 per cent of the borough.

"We have plans to extend this to the outlying homes in Pendle".
