THE Mini Mayor of Rossendale joined Rossendale's first citizen, Coun Peter Steen, to open a new playground at Sharneyford Primary School.

Katie Smith, 11, who attends the Bacup primary school, pulled a red ribbon to officially open the school's new playground.

The playground, which took 18 months to complete, has a climbing area, toadstools to sit on, a clatter bridge and a free-standing chalk board.

Headteacher Mrs Victoria Anne Milne said: "The playground is really colourful and the children seem to enjoy it.

"It will be mainly used for children in the early years and year one but it has proved popular with all the students."

The school also had their Easter fair on the same day and managed to raise £545.

Mrs Milne said: "This was a real achievement as we only have 52 children at the school."

Katie was chosen as the mini mayor and is shadowing the mayor for a year to see what life is like as the first citizen.
