DESCENDANTS of an Australian soldier who died in Darwen shortly after the First World War are being sought by the Royal British Legion.

The Darwen branch of has long been intrigued by the story of Ernest Ward and after getting new information on him are keen to build up their knowledge of the soldier who was buried in the town with full military honours.

Bryan Thompson, president of the Darwen branch, recently obtained Mr Ward's full military record which is being passed around members of the Legion.

Mr Ward died on December 1, 1918 at his uncle's home in the Spring Vale area. A letter to Mr Ward's family reveals he was cared for by cousin Nora Leach and uncle Fred Leach in Valemont.

Mr Thompson said: "I wonder if any relatives of his are still about. It's created so much interest among Legion members I wonder if they are aware of the connection."

Wreaths were also sent by cousins Mr and Mrs Butterfield, Mr and Mrs Bradley, Mrs Teague and Mrs Riding.
