A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Showers will feed into most of northern and western Scotland, Northern Ireland and north-west England during Friday and at least the first part of Saturday.

“Some of these showers will be heavy with a mixture of hail, sleet and snow.

“Snow accumulations are likely to mount up on hills, with about 10 to 15cm for some areas above 300m. Smaller accumulations are also expected at lower levels at times, with localised falls of 2 to 6cm. Ice will be an additional hazard on untreated surfaces.

“The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel.”

Bosses at Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council have assured residents grit supplies are plentiful and gritters will be out applying salt where necessary on main roads.
