THE politicians hoping to be the next MPs of Blackburn and Rossendale and Darwen have spoken in support of a campaign to stop cold homes.

Labour's Kate Hollern and Will Straw have endorsed the party pledge to make at least five million homes more energy efficient.

Coun Hollern, the leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council and prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) for Blackburn next year, said: "Energy bills have increased by a staggering £300 in the past four years.

"Investing in energy efficiency is the best way to keep bills down and to lift people out of fuel poverty.

"In Blackburn, there are currently 6,236 people living in fuel poverty, the highest percentage in Lancashire. This scandal has to stop."

Mr Straw, PPC for Rossendale and Darwen, said: "A further 4,176 housholds live in fuel poverty in Rossendale and Darwen.

"I have been pushing for some time for a new approach to tackling fuel poverty and am delighted that Labour is taking forward these plans.

"This commitment, to help low income and fuel poor families, across will save households across East Lancashire on average, an estimated £270."
