BRITISH Legion members visited Calderstones Hospital in Whalley at the weekend to take part in its Remembrance Parade.

The event at the former military hospital, which now caters for patients with learning disabilities, began with health bosses taking the salute, as standard bearers from across Lancashire marched past.

This was followed by a service of remembrance in St Luke’s Chapel within the Calderstones site, which included hymns and the sounding of the Last Post, with the moving music provided by Balderstone Brass Band.

Guests, including veterans and bikers, were also able to view an exhibition of images of the site’s history during the two world wars.

The congregation then moved to the military cemetery on Mitton Road in Whalley for the solemn laying of wreaths.

Guests at the event included Cllr Bridget Hilton, Deputy Mayor of Ribble Valley, and Rupert Nichols, chairman of Calderstones.

The cemetery is administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and this year includes an interpretation board giving a short history of the community's military history.

Calderstones was used as a military hospital during the First World War.
