Paraglider airlifted to hospital after fall near Chipping

First published in News

A PARAGLIDER suffered multiple injuries after falling up to 100ft.

The man, who was thought to be in his late 20s, was flown to hospital in the air ambulance with injuries to his head, shoulder, ribs, pelvis and thigh bone following the accident, which happened on the west side of Parlick fell above Chipping in the Ribble Valley.

The Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue team was also scrambled to help the casualty around 2pm today.

Paul Durham, from the organisation, said lots of paragliders had taken to the skies because of the warm and sunny conditions.

He said: “He was with a number of other friends who were flying as well and one of them saw him fall.

“First indications were he had sustained serious injuries in the fall estimated to be between 40ft and 100ft.

“Fifteen members of the team responded to the call and liaised with the aircrew of the air ambulance who requested the team bring to the accident scene stretcher, casualty bag and an array of spinal, leg and pelvic splints.

“On arrival at the scene it was clear the pilot had sustained multiple injuries to head, shoulder, ribs, pelvis and thigh bone.

“After overcoming steep ground conditions on which the casualty lay, he was placed on the stretcher and carried downhill to the awaiting air ambulance which flew direct to Royal Preston Hospital.”

The casualty was said to be in a stable condition despite being in a lot of pain after being put in a full body splint to be able to be taken to hospital.

The emergency teams were at the scene for just over 90 minutes. An investigation is due to be carried out to find the cause of the accident.
